Hi Bob - Thanks for this. I've been searching your site for the "best of" and this helps a lot.
I've made a lot of these changes in the last two years - including starting a blog, which has increased my income by about $20,000/year, with the added workshop requests and concerts etc that it has generated.
The most challenging thing for me is to continue thinking differently - and not get trapped in the same old boxes that I grew up learning about. Sometimes it feels almost like physical work to stop thinking in terms of the great and almighty "CD RELEASE!" and into a single song mindset.
Thanks!
Since there's too much music out there, consumers of music are seeking ways to find music they'll like.
By giving tons of free mp3s to download legally, disallowing commercial applications, you expose your sound to millions.
I buy CDs by bands after I have downloaded from 3 to 30 songs, which they made available at Hype Machine or a net label, or whatever.
I say: get on multiple file sharing sites, or mp3 hosting sites, then promote those URLs in multiple online venues: Twitter, blogs, Pownce (can share mp3 and jpeg files with your Friends), music forums, your email signature, and all marketing efforts.
Push those free mp3s, then have other products, like CDs, that people have to pay for.
YouTube is an ideal way to acquire fans also, as you stated.
