Welcome!

=> 1. The Three-Step Success Formula

Sparking a nerve with your audience can be a good thing. And
nerves were definitely sparked over our recent discussion of
part-time vs. full-time careers, especially when subscriber
Guy-Michael Grande took the conversation to a whole new
level in the last issue. If you missed it, read it online at
http://www.bob-baker.com/buzz/zine/2003/061703.html

In a nutshell, Guy said even though he currently works a day
job, he considers himself to be a full-time songwriter. Why?
Because that's who he is 24/7, while his day gig only
consumes 40 hours a week. He also made a reference to his
Clark Kent existence.

A subscriber named Peblz (www.peblz.info) responded, "Just
wanted to express my thanks for this particular analogy.
Superman *was* Superman all the time, even while he was
Clark Kent. That's really an excellent way to think of
ourselves -- as musicians, singers, songwriters, already
successful (if we feel that way) *because* we are what we
think we are. Thanks. That really brought it home in an
easily accessible way."

Synchronicity must be in full swing, because just this past
weekend I started reading "The One Minute Millionaire" by
Mark Victor Hanson (one of the Chicken Soup for the Soul
guys) and Robert Allen. One of their prosperity principles
is stated simply as BE-DO-HAVE, which is an approach too
few people take.

Most musicians (and humans in general) set a goal, such as
"I want to be a successful songwriter." Then they think,
"What do I have to DO to attain this goal?" They then get
busy "doing" with the idea that once they do enough to HAVE
what they want, then they'll BE that successful songwriter.

But that approach is out of order and works contrary to the
laws of success and prosperity. First you must BE who you
want to be. And believe it and "know" it to the core. Success
is not something you go and get; it's not a destination you
reach. It's something that resides inside of you -- a quality
you bring to everything you do.

If you want to be a songwriter, BE a songwriter. If you want
to be a jazz singer, BE a jazz singer first. Then from that
inner compass, DO the things that a successful songwriter or
jazz singer does. DO those things long enough and you will
eventually HAVE (or manifest) the material state you desire.

This might sound like New Age babble to some, but I believe
it's a solid philosophy -- one that's helped propel most of
my accomplishments in life.

Try this: Close your eyes and project yourself five years
into the future. Imagine that your ideal music career has
unfolded and that you've reached a stage that you consider
extremely successful. Really visualize that you've arrived
at this point.

If this was your reality, how would you act? How would you
carry yourself if you were a complete success? How would you
treat others? How much energy would you pour into creating
more great music and satisfying your large fan base? How
confident would you be contacting other successful musicians,
producers, etc.? How much would you go out of your way to
help good up-and-coming musicians? How content would you
feel?

Now let me ask you: How does that vision compare to the way
you act, feel and carry yourself now? If there's a drastic
difference, look inward and realize that you're made of the
same stuff as every successful musician. You have as much
right as anyone to embrace your own dreams.

So before you DO any more, and certainly before you HAVE
what you want, focus on BEing the type of person you know
you're destined to be!

=> 2. Catch Me On a No-Cost Teleconference July 12

I'll be doing a live phone interview with David Hooper,
founder of the Nashville New Music Conference, at 4 pm on
July 12. The topic will be "Guerrilla Music Marketing: 10
Steps to Widespread Exposure, Sales and Success as an
Independent Artist." There's no charge for the call, except
for any long distance charges you may incur. I'll send
specifics on how to participate in the next issue.

David is doing a series of these calls, all leading up to
the 2NMC event this Sept. 10-14. I plan on attending again
this year. If you want to showcase at the conference, the
submission deadline is June 30, so hurry up and visit

Have a fun-filled week or two!
