I'm not interested in generic advice like "get as much publicity as you can." I need specific examples, such as this ... Whenever you book a show date, find out if anything significant happened on that date (a well-known person's birthday or death day, a major event, debut, etc.). For example, Aug. 28 is the anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech -- a possible media angle for any performance on that date. On a lighter note, Aug. 28 is also Nancy Culp's (who played Miss Hathaway on 'The Beverly Hillbillies') and Jason Priestley's birthday. What sort of theme nights do those inspire?

"The purpose of life is to do something that contributes and helps you touch people beyond your lifetime -- do something with your life that will outlast it." "Life is a grindstone, and whether it grinds you down or polishes you up is for you to decide." -Cavett Robert ========== Buzz Thoughts of the Week ========== SURPRISING RESPONSES TO MY 9/11 REQUEST In the last issue I asked subscribers to let me know how they'd be handling the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Some musicians are choosing not to play on that date; others are going ahead with a show to honor those who lost their lives. Many performers are involved in tribute or memorial concerts -- many of which are taking place the weekend before the anniversary instead of on Sept. 11 itself. One of the most inspiring responses I received came from Mike Watson, a musician from Calgary, Alberta, Canada: "My birthday for the last 23 years has been Sept. 11. Unfortunately, since last year, the significance of that date has changed. Now, all of a sudden, everybody feels the need to lay claim to that date as though they were some part of it. "People who actually DID play a part in really helping people are well justified in this claim of being a part of it. For example, if you were a family in Newfoundland bringing American airline passengers into your home, or trying to help Americans get back across the border from somewhere in Canada, you were a part of it. "If you gazed at CNN in disbelief (as I did) and felt that because of your basic emotions, you were a part of it, you're sadly mistaken. "If I had the ability to play a gig on that day, I would. Instead, Slayer is coming to my home town of Calgary, Alberta, with Soulfly and In Flames. And you can bet your ass I'll be right up front having the best of times. "This has been MY day for 23 years and will remain to be for a long time to come. As is my custom, it will be a day of exuberant celebration and rejoicing of life. "I offer this advice to the rest of you: You cannot live life in fear ... You cannot live life in grief ... You cannot live life in regret ... You cannot live life in the past "If you really want to remember (or honor) those who died on that day, then LIVE! Because they can't! Live life to the fullest, while being the best person you can be. DO NOT let the actions of the people who killed them influence who you are. If you do, they have sadly achieved part of their goal. "Having tribute albums, shirts, bumper stickers, medallions, coins and all the rest of it is horseshit. "If you REALLY want to help, go outside and help at random. Your neighbor, your friend, your boss, a stranger. No matter their skin color, age or sex. Not just some cheap 20 dollar bill to fool yourself into thinking you've done some good for our race as a whole. Most likely, it would be a selfish try to make yourself feel better ABOUT YOURSELF. And that is not helping." Brenda MacIntyre (aka Midnight Rainbow, www.midnightrainbow.ca) explained: "Ten years to the day prior to last year's attacks (on Sept. 11, 1991) I headlined the International Peace Bureau Benefit here in Toronto, Canada. Some time after last year's tragedy, my press kit pages hit me in the face: PEACE - SEPT 11 - 1991. The irony is terrible, but for me as a musician, that was my best concert to date -- because my music and my whole being are about creating peace, and the people in the audience that day in 1991 wanted to do the same. "I debuted my song 'One People' on that day and it is going on my new album this year to pay tribute to all of us, because according to my lyrics written in 1991, 'We were born to love one another, created as sister and brother, together we can change the situation.' Together as musicians, we are a powerful entity and we can use that power to create harmony in more ways than one." Will Scott (www.SoloElectricBlues.com) wrote, "I was invited to participate in a series of shows taking place all over New York on Sept. 11. Please let people know about the program.
